Join us November 1-2, 2018 in White Hall, Arkansas to learn more about bioenergy and specifically the wood pellet industry. The third session of the 2018 Teacher’s Conservation Tour features Pine to Power, a workshop that will focus on bioenergy, the manufacturing of wood pellets, and sustainable forestry management that is providing fiber for this up and coming industry.
You may have heard the terms bioenergy and biomass but do you actually know what they mean? Bioenergy is renewable fuel made from organic matter that reduces carbon emissions. Biomass is organic matter used as a fuel, especially in a power station for the generation of electricity.
Why are we interested in bioenergy and wood pellets? Well, it is a renewable energy source that can help reduce carbon emissions while meeting the world’s ever-growing demand for energy. Through retrofitting, coal-fired power plants can utilize renewable wood pellets in place of non-renewable fossil fuels. Trees are renewable. As trees grow they absorb carbon through photosynthesis. In many species – pine included, young trees are better at storing carbon than mature trees. This cycle makes the use of sustainably harvested and manufactured wood bioenergy for energy generation a low carbon solution. Sustainably managed forests absorb more carbon and are more biologically diverse than unmanaged forests.
Space is limited to 25 participants and selected on a first-received, first-reserved basis.
The registration fee is $40/person. This fee covers lunch, field transportation during the workshop, materials, resources, and ADE-approved professional development hours. The registration fee does not include lodging. Participants will need to make their own lodging reservations, if needed.
Applicants should be aware that this workshop will involve outdoor activities requiring walking in rough, uneven terrain and sometimes in adverse weather conditions.
