8:30 a.m. – 3:30 p.m.
The workshop will introduce the fundamentals of game development using the Unreal Engine 4 game engine and its Blueprints visual scripting system. It will consist of several lessons, each consisting of a step-by-step, guided tutorial (20 minutes) followed by activities for participants to apply what they learned in the demonstration (30 minutes each).
This workshop will be taught at an introductory level. No prior experience in computer programming is necessary. While the workshop will be teaching programming, it may also be relevant to students interested in game design in general, not just those interested in programming, since it will provide students with a starting point to work from for exploring other aspects of game design.
By the end of the event participants will have their own playable game, as well as an understanding of:
- Core programming concepts such as variables, functions, and objects.
- Navigation and use of Unreal Engine 4.
- Game design aspects such as: AI, 3D meshes, user interfaces, and sound.
Participants need to bring their own laptops. Recommended system requirements for participants bringing their own laptops:
- Mandatory: Windows 7 64-bit or later / Mac OS X 10.9.2 or later
- 8 GB of RAM
- Quad-core Intel or AMD processor
- 20GB of Hard drive space
