This professional development session will focus on the Science and Engineering Practices; specifically, Developing and Using Models and Constructing Explanations and Designing Solutions, to explore energy in the life sciences. This session is appropriate for 6-12 teachers or instructional coaches. In this six-hour session, participants will serve in a “student role” for the first two hours, as they are immersed in a model lesson for teaching about energy from an inquiry perspective. The second two hour block will focus on specific strategies utilized during the model lesson, and elaborate on other instructional strategies teachers may use to engage students in the development and usage of models in the classroom. The final two hours will be a time for lesson planning and redesign, with time for participants to showcase their lesson or strategy with the workshop elements implemented. Light breakfast and a working lunch will be included.
