Event # 341673
The HSU STEM Center is hosting a virtual book study of “5 Practices for Orchestrating Productive Mathematics Discussions” by Margaret S. Smith and Mary Kay Stein. This book study is open to K-16 educators, and the cost to attend the book study is the price of the book and the cost of getting it delivered at your doorstep. We will have a web meeting once a month (February-May) to discuss 2 chapters at a time. We will explore and engage in each “Active Engagement” posed by the author for each chapter.
The 5 Practices include: Anticipating students’ solutions to a mathematics task; Monitoring students’ in-class, “real-time” work on the task; selecting approaches and students to share them; sequencing students’ presentations purposefully; and connecting students’ approaches and the underlying mathematics. These practices have the power to put teachers in control of productive classroom discussions!
