The Ozark Plateau, Ozark Highlands or Ozark Dome, as it is variously known, is characterized by exposed marine sediments, averaging 1500 ft in depth, primarily made up of sedimentary deposits including limestone, dolomite, and sandstone, creating a karst topography not subject to major structural geological changes, saltwater flooding or glaciation since flowering plants first evolved 200 million years ago.
An initial survey of floristic sources compared with ethnobotanical data and historical works on American medicinal plants identified 477 species of medicinal plants in the Ozarks. At least 195 species, including both native and alien elements of the flora are represented in international trade in medicinal and aromatic plants. At least 35 species are traded in significant tonnage. A brief survey of the Ozark medicinal flora and potential under-developed resources and conservation concerns will emphasize the human interaction with these fascinating plants
