Arkansas Space Grant Consortium (ASGC) Android-Sensor Competition

The competition is open to all Arkansas college students enrolled in Arkansas. Teams of 1 or more students are will compete for awards. Each team must have a mentor. Teams meet at the Winthrop Rockefeller Institute on Petit Jean Mountain on Thursday afternoon, April 16, 2020 to submit a written report and demonstrate their project. A banquet will follow. On Friday, each team will present a poster or oral report of their project at the Arkansas Space Grant Symposium. Awards will be announced during the noon luncheon on Friday. Each team will be given instructions and an unlocked Android* phone with sensors and components to learn simple interfacing between Android phones and sensors. Instructions illustrating simple sensor interfacing projects will be included to get everyone started. Technical experts will be available for consultation by email, phone or even a visit, if needed. Each project must utilize an Android phone interfaced to one or more sensors and used to solve a problem. The sensors may be one of the sensors in the phone itself or an external phone or even a scientific instrument or camera. Examples include: Building and using an Android phone microscope or telescope Acquiring data from a sensor and transmitting it over the internet Building an Android phone oscilloscope Inspecting plant leaves for insect damage or chemical deficiency Building a music synthesizer Measuring the human eye as a security device Operate mobile robot by roll, pitch and yaw movement of phone Build Android phone spectrometer Let your imagination be your inspiration! If you are a K-12 student or teacher please contact us if you would like to participate. We can allow a few schools to join in as an outreach project. Because this is a pilot project, we may have to limit the number of contestants. To enter the competition, please have your mentor email the names and contact Information of each team member along with major and year in college, and a name for the team to [email protected]. My cell phone is 501 278 7268 if more information is needed. *Other types of smart phones may be used but the sponsors cannot help with technical details of programming; phones must be provided by participants.
